Accelerant Detection Dogs
The dog determines if an accelerant is present. An accelerant detection dog locates the presence of accelerants at the scene of a fire. The results depend on the dog’s powerful sense of smell and ability to analyze different odors and locate the source. If a dog does not indicate the presence of an accelerant then it is presumed that there are no accelerants were present at the time of the fire. When the dog alerts on a positive presence of accelerant the investigator takes a sample from each indication the dog has made and submits them for further analysis.
Dog is trained to locate over 20 different accelerants.
Accelerant Detection Dogs provide a valuable service.
When fire investigators and forensic engineers of Origin & Cause are called to the scene after an incident, it is their job to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Suspicious circumstances surrounding the physical evidence on site can lead investigators to suspect foul play. Fire investigators take a systematic approach to understanding the science behind an incident, and one of the most powerful tools available to forensic experts analyzing the scene of a fire is a professionally-trained accelerant detection dog.

Major insurance companies realize the value of utilizing trained dogs to help investigators determine possible causes of a fire. Using a trained K9 to determine the presence of an accelerant odor has been proven to shortcut the time and money spent on the investigation. Our dogs are certified yearly by and independent certifier from Eastern State Working Dog Association. Over the years Smoke Sr. has also been certified by Canine Accelerant Detection Association both highly respected K9 organizations.
How many odors does the accelerant dog detect?
The dog is trained to analyze 20 different accelerants. These substances start out as liquid, but after a fire they become a vapor in cracks and crevices. The dog is not indicating on the burned wood because the accelerant on a piece of wood will more than likely burn completely away. When a fire occurs a masonry structure ie. concrete, cinder block the accelerant is absorbed in the porous surfaces and becomes trapped as vapors.
** Important note ** While the surface of glazed tile will not absorb an accelerant the grout between the tiles will.

Accelerant Dog Training
The length of time we take to train an accelerant detection dog is 6 to 8 weeks. Once the dog has completed its training the handler is brought in to integrate with the dog over 7-10 days to prepare for testing and certification. Upon successfully passing the test they are then a certified Accelerant Detection Dog team.
